ROSE Summer Schools – 2020

UPDATE: THE REGISTRATION PERIOD HAS ENDED!
The „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași (UAIC) will conduct online, between July 6 and 19, 2020, twelve summer programs funded through the Secondary Education Project (ROSE) by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank), aimed at organizing courses and other relevant activities for high school students—particularly those from disadvantaged social backgrounds—to encourage them to complete their high school studies and facilitate their continuation of education at the tertiary level.

For students to be able to participate in online activities, the University offers all those selected for one of the 12 summer schools a tablet with mobile internet traffic included. To this end, it is necessary for all participants to be within the coverage area of mobile internet providers during the course period.

12th-grade students participating in one of our summer schools who wish to become students of the „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași will be able to request support for online registration from the students involved in the program.

List of Summer Schools Implemented by UAIC

"I want to be a student at Letters! – Summer school for students – LiteratIS" (Faculty of Letters)
The summer school for students „I want to be a student at Letters! – LiteratIS”, organized online by the Faculty of Letters between July 6–19, 2020, offers participants a variety of interactive educational and recreational activities carried out under the coordination of the professors and students of the Faculty of Letters.

For the smooth running of the summer school, in addition to funding that fully covers participation costs, students who choose the LiteratIS course will receive a tablet with an internet connection, which they will use during the summer school classes and workshops and, subsequently, after its conclusion, for other educational activities, such as high school or college classes.

From Monday to Friday, each day’s program will contain educational activities, such as:

  • Familiarizing students, through participation in interactive presentations and practical activities, with the cultures of the languages studied at the Faculty of Letters of UAIC. Thus, they will discover fascinating information about Romanian, English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Latin, and Greek language and culture, will be able to ask questions, and will collaborate to complete work tasks.

The „Summer School in the fields of Orthodox Theology and History to improve the opportunities of participation in higher education for students at risk of dropout” (TEOIST) aims to create an early university experience for students enrolled in terminal high school grades. The summer school will run between July 6–19, 2020, online, during which students will benefit from an intensive and diversified program of courses, workshops, visits (virtual tour), recreational and personal development activities, which will ultimately lead to familiarizing students with student life in the fields of orthodox theology or history. Participation is free!
Mathematics, as is well known, forms the basis of all sciences, but it also guides almost every step we take in daily life. Although it is not the favorite of many students, we cannot get by without it, and those who understand it have a clear advantage over others in many professions.

On the other hand, computer science started as a branch of mathematics, which broke away from the common trunk and followed its own path, without ever forgetting where it came from. Today, it is in high demand because it constantly brings new things and new challenges into our lives.

The INFORMAT summer school wants to show students the best of both worlds, what opportunities open up for those who follow them, and what they will be able to do later if they choose to walk this path. It is not possible to fully present something so vast, but students will be able to come into contact with some directions that we hope they will find appealing:

  • Cryptography and information security – who isn’t interested today in what can happen to their tablet or computer, their phone, or even their bank account? They are all more or less vulnerable to “electronic” wrongdoers, and it is good to learn how to protect ourselves from trouble.
  • Astronomy – it’s not just for astronauts! Celestial mechanics, planetary orbits, comets, artificial satellites—all belong to this field, which attracts numerous enthusiasts.
  • How computers and programs work – many students have already discovered some of their secrets, but there are still plenty left to uncover.
  • The future of computer science – about robots, virtual reality, social networks, 3D printers, and much more. There are so many new technologies changing our lives almost every day that it is hard for us to keep up with them.
There will also be visits to companies, generally in the IT sector. Although it may not be easy to believe, not only computer scientists work there, but mathematicians as well. All it takes is knowing (and wanting) to use your knowledge and talent to do something that will help others too.
The summer school will take place this year between July 6 and July 19, 2020 (a duration of 2 consecutive weeks) and is prepared and implemented within the two faculties: the Faculty of Philosophy and Social-Political Sciences and the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences. The program will include a wide range of activities, among which: the presentation of the educational offering by representatives of the two faculties, the presentation of university facilities and equipment, the holding of courses and seminars similar to those conducted during the academic year, professional counseling and career guidance, workshops in specific fields, participation in recreational-sports activities (team games, movie screenings, folk concerts), cultural events, and relaxation and exploratory walks to get to know the university city of Iași.

Throughout the duration of the summer school, students will constantly benefit from the support of the university academic staff, the involvement of representatives of student associations, and student volunteers, so that they can experience an authentic university experience that will encourage them to continue their studies.
The summer school for students „Discover your vocation through education! Summer School – Psychology and Educational Sciences – DEVO”, organized by the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences between July 6–19, 2020, offers participants a variety of online study and recreational activities carried out under the coordination of the professors and students of the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences.

Within the program, students will participate online in:

  • their first academic courses in the field of Psychology and Educational Sciences, taught by university professors on topics that are genuinely part of the curriculum of the faculty’s specializations;
  • academic orientation and career counseling activities;
  • workshops for developing self-awareness and self-assertion skills, communication, and interpersonal relationships;
  • trainings regarding: reading and effective learning strategies, time management and relaxation techniques for stress management, and mindfulness techniques to improve learning performance;
  • virtual visits to museums and various other tourist attractions in Iași;
  • educational, recreational, and leisure activities.
All these activities to which students are invited to participate aim to create a positive perception and provide an early university experience designed to familiarize summer school participants with the academic environment and initiate an early development of relevant skills and decision-making capacity regarding a study path in higher education.

For the smooth running of the summer school, participants in the DEVO program will receive a student kit containing, among other things, a tablet that they will use during classes and workshops, and furthermore, after the completion of the summer school program, as a learning optimization tool.
The summer school „Come to the GREEN Faculty”, organized by the Faculty of Biology between July 6 – 19, 2020, offers participants a variety of activities conducted online under the coordination of the professors and students of the Faculty of Biology. Students will benefit from an attractive program through which they will familiarize themselves with the campus facilities and understand the main benchmarks of university training, as well as the opportunities they will have if they choose to study at the Faculty of Biology of UAIC.

For the smooth running of the summer school, participants will receive a student kit containing a tablet with mobile internet traffic included, which they will use during the classes and workshops of the summer school and, subsequently, as a tool for optimizing learning.

The program of the 14 days contains the following categories of activities:

  • Virtual visits to explore the UAIC campus, including leisure facilities;
  • Virtual counseling and career guidance workshops;
  • Online specialized courses and workshops titled – Exploring the green of the living world!;

Testimonials from students participating in the Summer Schools organized in 2019

“The most important things I learned at the summer school were related to prejudices, meaning not judging a book by its cover, the way people see and perceive you, but also the fact that in a team it’s not about individuals, but about a unitary whole.

I honestly say that LiteratIS changed me as a person, made me rediscover myself, made me overcome my shyness, and made me a better version of myself. You can apply to Letters even if you are passionate about something else because it helps you. LiteratIS doesn’t just mean books, reading, and essays. LiteratIS means family, it means love, affection, tenderness, and even arguments sometimes. LiteratIS changes worlds! What do you say? Did I hook you? Are you ready to change your own world?”
“When I found out that I had been selected for the Literatis program, I was overwhelmed by a wave of unique and inexplicable emotions: joy, delight, gratitude, enthusiasm, curiosity, and dozens of others. I had very high expectations, and after the first days, I realized that even my expectations had been surpassed—I came to consider this place home. Every day we had all sorts of constructive activities, I found out a lot of things about the university, its specializations, and I got to know the campus and a large part of the city. I met wonderful people, university professors, students, and above all, I met many students with whom I formed lasting friendships, exchanged opinions, had fun, and lived every moment to the fullest.

Aside from the fact that it helped many of us orient ourselves regarding college, this experience matured us and introduced us to student life. Words are redundant to be able to express my positive opinion about this beautiful chapter of my life, which left its mark on me and determined me to work hard to get admitted further to the „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University, Faculty of Letters.”
“I believe in you, and if I managed to adapt, I am sure you will too. Good luck, have fun, don’t stress too much!”
“Hello, little student!

You should know that I was once just like you are today—maybe a bit shy, and so eager to see what awaited me. However, I discovered that shyness holds you back, it confines you, whereas you should always try new things.

I met a lot of wonderful people in this place with whom I formed friendships, because that is the most important thing. I learned a bunch of things beneficial for my future, I experienced the simulation of a student’s life and tried to keep up with it, even though sometimes it was very tiring. I realized that if you want to be appreciated, you have to work for it. That you must respect in order to be respected.

LiteratIS was the best thing that has happened to me so far. Here I faced every possible feeling, I convinced myself regarding the faculty I want to follow, and I realized what characterizes me.

So GIVE IT A TRY! You have nothing to lose; on the contrary, you only stand to gain experience, new friends, information regarding the faculty you want to attend, and other things experienced during two wonderful weeks.

YOLO — You only live once

So make the most of it!”
“I learned what the word „team” means, I learned to a large extent what student life is, and I understood that learning isn’t just about memorizing information.”
“I learned to live every moment, to leave with beautiful memories and an unforgettable experience.”
“The expectations were beyond measure, I learned a lot of new things, and I am deeply glad that I came here and I truly don’t regret anything. I will definitely repeat this unique and special experience next year.”
