Overview
The Faculty of Orthodox Theology is a co-founder of the University of Iași and continues the history of the Faculties of Theology in Iași (1860–1864), Cernăuți-Suceava (1875–1948), and Chișinău (1926–1941). The faculty assumes a fundamental role in the theological training and spiritual formation of future servants of the Holy Altars, teaching staff for religious and theological education, specialists in social work, ecclesial art, and cultural heritage, as well as all those who wish to know and deepen Orthodox theology.Under the spiritual patronage of the Three Holy Hierarchs and the academic aegis of Father Dumitru Stăniloae, the Faculty of Orthodox Theology aims to offer education anchored in biblical foundations, developed by patristic authors, cultivated by our illustrious predecessors, and open to contemporary religious, cultural, and scientific dialogue.
Currently, teaching activities are carried out here by a faculty body trained at prestigious universities in Europe. It stands out through nationally and internationally recognized research activities, materialized in specialized books, studies, articles, and participation in conferences in the country and abroad.
Based on numerous collaboration agreements concluded between the Faculty of Orthodox Theology “Saint Dumitru Stăniloae” and university centers in Italy, England, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Switzerland, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Mount Athos, the Netherlands, Norway, and Lebanon, its students, master’s students, doctoral students, and professors benefit from study, practical, and teaching mobilities at prestigious faculties. In Romania, the Faculty has concluded agreements with various socio-cultural partners, with students having the opportunity to be part of their strategic projects.
The Faculty of Orthodox Theology “Saint Dumitru Stăniloae” carries out its activity in a spacious building located near the Metropolitan Cathedral. The lecture and seminar rooms, laboratories and workshops, multimedia room, and its own chapel provide an environment conducive to formal and non-formal theological education. For the Sacred Art specialization, the Faculty has a high-performing laboratory intended for the investigation and restoration of old books and documents. The students and professors of the Faculty of Theology also have access to the “Dumitru Stăniloae” Library within the Archdiocese of Iași, which features over 180,000 books and journals.
Starting with the 2023–2024 academic year, the Faculty of Orthodox Theology “Saint Dumitru Stăniloae” also organizes bachelor’s degree courses at the extension in Chișinău (Republic of Moldova).
The Faculty of Orthodox Theology Library “Saint Dumitru Stăniloae” is located in building T of the University, ground floor, 9 Cloșca St., Iași.
