11 summer schools within a bridge-type program aimed at high school students

The „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași (UAIC) will also organize, in 2023, 11 summer programs funded through the Secondary Education Project (ROSE) by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank), aimed at providing courses and other relevant activities for high school students—particularly those from disadvantaged social backgrounds—to encourage them to complete their high school studies and facilitate their continuation of education at the tertiary level.

List of summer schools within UAIC

To ensure that each student can experience student life at one of the faculties within UAIC, the following Summer Schools will be organized in 2023:

„Discovering the Earth towards the heights of knowledge!” - GEO-GEO (Faculty of Geography and Geology): 03.07.2023–16.07.2023
The Faculty of Geography and Geology of the „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași is organizing between 3 – 16 July 2023 (14 days) the summer school Discovering the Earth towards the heights of knowledge! (GEO-GEO) intended for students from high schools eligible to receive funding through the ROSE grant scheme.

Students in at-risk situations can participate and will benefit from an intensive and diversified program of practical courses that will help them understand the specifics of geology as a science that studies the Earth, its composition and structure, fossils and the evolution of life throughout geological time, as well as its relationship with the Earth’s mineral resources.

Geography as a science will become more engaging for students through an understanding of how natural resources related to water and soil must be managed in accordance with the principles of sustainable development, within the context of urban progress and demographic growth.

Workshops will provide students with skills and competencies related to the analysis of water, soil, and rock samples using modern equipment, and will help them forecast probable weather based on natural phenomena.

Study visits conducted at the Iași Meteorological Station and the Repedea Geological and Paleontological Reserve in Iași will contribute to learning modern tools and methods for recording climatic parameters, storing and transmitting information, and developing meteorological forecasts. Students will better understand the geological history of the city of Iași.

During a 1-day study trip, students will have the opportunity to visit one of the most interesting research and student practice stations in Romania. Located in the Rarău Massif at an altitude of 1572 meters, the „Ion Gugiuman” Rarău Research and Student Practice Station constitutes an extremely important base for scientific research in Romania.

Special attention will be dedicated to professional counseling and career guidance activities, through which students will receive specialized assistance to make informed and correct decisions regarding their future university path, in correlation with their own aspirations and cognitive potential.

For the benefit of the students, sports competitions and recreational activities will be organized, through which students will experience team spirit, leadership drive, the ability to express themselves artistically, and other empowering traits. Cultural events (museum visits, attending shows) scheduled during the summer school will lead to a better appreciation of the artistic and cultural heritage of academic Iași and will highlight the prospects that student life entails.

To truly experience what student life means, students will be accommodated in the university dormitories and will be served meals at the canteen. They will equally benefit from the university’s educational facilities: conference and seminar rooms, computer and multimedia laboratories, sports facilities, and recreational areas within the university campus.

Each student participating in the GEO-GEO summer school will receive the following materials: pen, notebook, baseball cap, backpack, t-shirt, badge, world geographic atlas, smartwatch, keychain compass, memory stick, and other materials necessary for the smooth running of the activity.

Mathematics, as is well known, forms the basis of all sciences, but it also guides almost every step we take in daily life. Although it is sometimes perceived by some students as “hard,” we cannot get by without it, and those who understand it have a clear advantage over others in many professions. When can we realize that the effective practice of mathematical reasoning is useful to us? For example, when we manage to correctly understand a statement in any field and when we manage to quickly find solutions to various problems in the workplace.

On the other hand, computer science started as a branch of mathematics, which broke away from the common trunk and followed its own path, without ever forgetting where it came from. Today, it is one of the most sought-after fields in the job market because it constantly brings new solutions and ideas, as well as new adaptation challenges in our lives. The future is expected to seek good specialists who combine mathematical knowledge with computer science skills to apply them across all other sciences and practical activities.

The INFORMAT summer school wants to show students the best of both worlds, what opportunities open up for those who follow them, and what they will be able to do later if they choose to walk this path. It is not possible to fully present something so vast, but students will be able to come into contact with some directions that we hope they will find appealing:

  • Cryptography and information security – who isn’t interested today in what can happen to their tablet or computer, their phone, or even their bank account? They are all more or less vulnerable to “electronic” wrongdoers, and it is good to learn how to protect ourselves from trouble.
  • Astronomy – it’s not just for astronauts! Celestial mechanics, planetary orbits, comets, artificial satellites—all belong to this field, which attracts numerous enthusiasts.
  • How computers and programs work – many students have already discovered some of their secrets, but there are still plenty left to uncover.
  • The future of computer science – about robots, virtual reality, social networks, 3D printers, and much more. There are so many new technologies changing our lives almost every day that it is hard for us to keep up with them.
There will also be visits to companies, generally in the IT sector. Although it may not be easy to believe, not only computer scientists work there, but mathematicians as well. All it takes is knowing (and wanting) to use your knowledge and talent to do something that will help others too.
The summer school for students „Discover your vocation through education! Summer School – Psychology and Educational Sciences – DEVO”, organized by the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences from the „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași, between 17 – 30 July 2023, offers participants a variety of study and recreational activities carried out under the coordination of the faculty’s professors and students.

Within the program, students will participate in:

  • their first academic courses and seminars in the field of psychology and educational sciences, taught by university professors on topics that are genuinely part of the curriculum of the faculty’s specializations;
  • academic orientation and career counseling activities;
  • workshops for developing self-awareness and self-assertion skills, communication, and interpersonal relationships;
  • trainings regarding: reading and effective learning strategies, time management and relaxation techniques for stress management, and mindfulness techniques to improve learning performance;
  • visits to museums and various other tourist attractions in Iași;
  • educational, recreational, and leisure activities.
All these activities to which students are invited to participate aim to create a positive perception and provide an early university experience designed to familiarize summer school participants with the academic environment and initiate an early development of relevant skills and decision-making capacity regarding a study path in higher education.

For the smooth running of the summer school, participants in the DEVO program will receive a student kit containing: a smart backpack, a phone power bank, wireless headphones, a pen, a notebook/journal, a thermos/water bottle, a USB stick, a book, and a personalized t-shirt and cap. The kit will be used by participating students during classes and workshops, as well as after the completion of the summer school program as learning resources.

This program is intended for students enrolled in the over 1,100 low-performing public high schools (representing 80% of all public high schools), especially students from disadvantaged groups.

Students are considered to be at risk if they meet at least one of the following conditions:

  • they come from low-income families;
  • they are historically discriminated against based on ethnicity (including Roma);
  • they live in rural areas or other areas where there are no schools in proximity;
  • they have one or both parents working abroad;
  • they have special educational needs.

Testimonials from participating high school students in the summer schools

„The most important things I learned at the summer school were related to prejudices—meaning not judging a book by its cover, the way people see and perceive you, and also the fact that in a team it’s not about individuals, but about a unified whole.
I honestly say that LiteratIS changed me as a person, made me rediscover myself, helped me overcome my shyness, and made me a better version of myself. You can apply to Letters even if you are passionate about something else, because it helps you. LiteratIS doesn’t just mean books, reading, and essays. LiteratIS means family, love, affection, tenderness, and sometimes even arguments. LiteratIS changes worlds! What do you say? Did I hook you? Are you ready to change your own world?”

“When I found out that I had been selected for the LiteratIS program, I was overwhelmed by a wave of unique and inexplicable emotions: joy, delight, gratitude, enthusiasm, curiosity, and dozens of others. I had very high expectations, but after the first days, I realized that even my expectations had been surpassed—I came to consider this place home. Every day we had all sorts of constructive activities, I learned a lot of things about the university and its specializations, and I got to know the campus and a large part of the city. I met wonderful people, university professors, students, and above all, I met many students with whom I formed lasting friendships, exchanged opinions, had fun, and lived every moment to the fullest.
Aside from the fact that it helped many of us figure out our university direction, this experience matured us and introduced us to student life. Words are not enough to express my positive opinion about this beautiful chapter in my life, which left its mark on me and determined me to work hard to get accepted further at the „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University, Faculty of Letters.”

“I believe in you, and if I managed to adapt, I am sure you will too. Good luck, have fun, don’t stress too much!”

“Hello, little student!
You should know that I was once just like you are today—perhaps a bit shy, and so eager to see what was waiting for me. However, I discovered that shyness holds you back and constrains you, whereas you should always try new things.
In this place, I met a lot of wonderful people with whom I formed friendships, because that is the most important thing. I learned a ton of things beneficial for my future, I experienced a simulation of a student’s life, and I tried to face it head-on, even though sometimes it was very tiring. I realized that if you want to be appreciated, you have to work for it. That you must respect in order to be respected.
LiteratIS was the best thing that has happened to me so far. Here I dealt with every possible emotion, I made up my mind about the faculty I want to attend, and I figured out what defines me.
So GIVE IT A TRY! You have nothing to lose—on the contrary, you only stand to gain experience, new friends, information regarding the faculty you want to attend, and other things experienced during two wonderful weeks.
YOLO — You only live once
So make the most of it!”

“I learned what the word „team” means, I learned to a large extent what student life is, and I understood that learning is not just about memorizing information.”

“I learned to live every moment, to leave with beautiful memories and an unforgettable experience.”

“The expectations were beyond measure, I learned a lot of new things, and I am wholeheartedly glad I came here and I truly don’t regret anything. I will definitely repeat this unique and special experience next year.”
