The „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași (UAIC) will also organize, in 2024, 11 summer programs funded through the Secondary Education Project (ROSE) by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank), aimed at providing courses and other relevant activities for high school students—particularly those from disadvantaged social backgrounds—to encourage them to complete their high school studies and facilitate their continuation of education at the tertiary level.

List of summer schools within UAIC

„Discovering the Earth towards the heights of knowledge!” - GEO-GEO (Faculty of Geography and Geology): 15.07.2024 – 28.07.2024 – 50 available spots
The Faculty of Geography and Geology of the „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași is organizing the „Discovering the Earth towards the heights of knowledge! (GEO-GEO)” Summer School between 15.07.2024 and 28.07.2024 (14 days), intended for students from high schools eligible to receive funding through the ROSE grant scheme.

Students in at-risk situations can participate and will benefit from an intensive and diversified program of practical courses that will help them understand the specifics of geology as a science that studies the Earth, its composition and structure, fossils and the evolution of life throughout geological time, as well as its relationship with the Earth’s mineral resources.

Geography as a science will become more engaging for students through an understanding of how natural resources related to water and soil must be managed in accordance with the principles of sustainable development, within the context of urban progress and demographic growth. Workshops will provide students with skills and competencies related to the analysis of water, soil, and rock samples using modern equipment, and will help them forecast probable weather based on natural phenomena.

Study visits conducted at the Iași Meteorological Station and the Repedea Geological and Paleontological Reserve in Iași will contribute to learning modern tools and methods for recording climatic parameters, storing and transmitting information, and developing meteorological forecasts. Students will better understand the geological history of the city of Iași.

During a 1-day study trip, students will have the opportunity to visit one of the most interesting research and student practice stations in Romania. Located in the Rarău Massif at an altitude of 1572 meters, the „Ion Gugiuman” Rarău Research and Student Practice Station constitutes an extremely important base for scientific research in Romania.

Special attention will be dedicated to professional counseling and career guidance activities, through which students will receive specialized assistance to make informed and correct decisions regarding their future university path, in correlation with their own aspirations and cognitive potential.

For the benefit of the students, sports competitions and recreational activities will be organized, through which students will experience team spirit, leadership drive, the ability to express themselves artistically, and other empowering traits. Cultural events (museum visits, attending shows) scheduled during the summer school will lead to a better appreciation of the artistic and cultural heritage of academic Iași and will highlight the prospects that student life entails.

To truly experience what student life means, students will be accommodated in the university dormitories and will be served meals at the canteen. They will equally benefit from the university’s educational facilities: conference and seminar rooms, computer and multimedia laboratories, sports facilities, and recreational areas within the university campus.

Each student participating in the GEO-GEO summer school will receive the following materials: pen, notebook, baseball cap, backpack, t-shirt, badge, world geographic atlas, smartwatch, keychain compass, memory stick, and other materials necessary for the smooth running of the activity.
The summer school for students „I want to be a student at Letters! – LiteratIS”, organized by the Faculty of Letters between 18 – 31 July 2024, offers participants a variety of interactive, educational, and recreational activities carried out under the coordination of the professors and students of the Faculty of Letters.

For the smooth running of the summer school, in addition to the funding that fully covers participation costs, students who choose the LiteratIS course will receive a tablet to use during the summer school classes and workshops, and afterward, upon returning home, as a tool to optimize their learning.

The schedule for each day has the following structure:

Mathematics, as is well known, forms the basis of all sciences, but also guides almost every step we take in daily life. Although it is sometimes perceived by some students as “difficult,” we cannot get along without it, and those who understand it have a clear advantage over others in many professions. When can we realize that the effective practice of mathematical reasoning is useful to us? For example, when we manage to correctly understand a statement in any field and when we manage to quickly find solutions to various problems at the workplace.

On the other hand, computer science started as a branch of mathematics that broke away from the common trunk and followed its own path, without ever forgetting where it came from. Today, it is one of the most sought-after fields on the labor market because it constantly brings new solutions and ideas, as well as new challenges for adaptation in our lives. The future is expected to demand good specialists who combine knowledge of mathematics with that of computer science to apply them in all other sciences and practical activities.

The INFORMAT Summer School aims to show students the best of both worlds, the opportunities that open up for those who follow them, and what they will be able to do later if they choose to walk this path. It is not possible to present something so vast in its entirety, but students will be able to get in touch with some directions that we hope they will find appealing:

  • Cryptography and information security – who isn’t interested today in what can happen to their tablet, computer, phone, or even bank account? All of them are more or less vulnerable to “electronic” wrongdoers, and it is good to learn how to protect ourselves from trouble.
  • Astronomy – it’s not just for cosmonauts! Celestial mechanics, planetary orbits, comets, artificial satellites—all belong to this field, which attracts numerous enthusiasts.
  • How computers and programs work – many students have already discovered some of their secrets, but there are still plenty left to uncover.
  • The future of computer science – about robots, virtual reality, social networks, 3D printers, and much more. There are so many new technologies changing our lives almost every day that it is hard for us to keep up with them.

There will also be visits to companies, generally in the IT field. Although it may not be easy to believe, not only computer scientists find a place there, but mathematicians as well. Everything is about knowing (and wanting) to use your knowledge and talent to do something that will help others as well.

Each student participating in the INFORMAT summer school will receive a personalized kit: tablet, cap, t-shirt, badge, notebook, personalized backpack, pen, and other materials necessary for the smooth running of the activity.
The summer school for students „Discover your vocation through education! Summer School – Psychology and Educational Sciences – DEVO”, organized by the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași, between 18 – 31 July 2024, offers participants a variety of study and recreational activities carried out under the coordination of the faculty’s professors and students.

Within the program, students will participate in:

  • their first academic courses and seminars in the field of psychology and educational sciences, taught by university professors on topics that are actually part of the curriculum of the faculty’s specializations;
  • academic orientation and career counseling activities;
  • workshops for developing self-awareness and self-assertion skills, communication, and interpersonal relationships;
  • trainings regarding: reading and efficient learning strategies, time management and relaxation techniques for stress management, mindfulness techniques to improve learning performance;
  • visits to museums and various other tourist attractions in Iași;
  • educational, recreational, and leisure activities.

All these activities to which students are invited to participate aim to create a positive perception and build an early university experience, designed to familiarize summer school participants with the academic environment and initiate an early development of relevant skills and decision-making capacity regarding a study path in higher education.

For the smooth running of the summer school, participants in the DEVO program will receive a kit containing: a book, smart backpack, phone power bank, wireless headphones, writing instruments, notebook/journal, thermos/water bottle, USB stick, personalized t-shirt and cap. The kit will be used by participating students during classes and workshops, as well as after the completion of the summer school program as learning resources.

This program is intended for students enrolled in the over 1,100 low-performing state high schools (representing 80% of all state high schools), especially students from disadvantaged groups.

Students are considered at risk if they meet at least one of the following conditions:

  • they come from low-income families;
  • they are historically discriminated against based on ethnicity (including Roma);
  • they live in rural areas or other areas where there are no schools in proximity;
  • they have one or both parents working abroad;
  • they have special educational needs.
