Summer schools funded through the Secondary Education Project (ROSE)

In July 2019, the „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași (UAIC) will conduct nine summer programs funded through the Secondary Education Project (ROSE) by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (The World Bank). These programs aim to provide courses and other relevant activities for high school students—particularly socially disadvantaged ones—to encourage them to complete their high school studies and facilitate the continuation of their education at the tertiary level.

Mathematics, as is well known, forms the foundation of all sciences, but it also guides almost every step we take in daily life. Although it is not the favorite subject of many students, we cannot get along without it, and those who understand it have a clear advantage over others in many professions.

On the other hand, computer science started as a branch of mathematics that broke away from the common trunk and followed its own path, without ever forgetting where it came from. Today, it is in very high demand because it constantly brings new things and new challenges into our lives.

The INFORMAT summer school wants to show students the best of both worlds, what opportunities open up for those who follow them, and what they will be able to do later if they choose to walk this path. It is not possible to present something so vast in its entirety, but students will be able to get in touch with some directions that we hope they will find appealing:

– Cryptography and information security – who isn’t interested today in what could happen to their tablet, computer, phone, or even bank account? All of them are more or less vulnerable to “electronic” wrongdoers, and it is good to learn how to protect ourselves from trouble.

– Astronomy – it’s not just for astronauts! Celestial mechanics, planetary orbits, comets, artificial satellites—all of these belong to this field, which attracts numerous enthusiasts.

– How computers and programs work – many students have already discovered some of their secrets, but there are still plenty left to learn.

– The future of computer science – about robots, virtual reality, social networks, 3D printers, and much more. There are so many new technologies changing our lives almost every day that it is hard for us to keep up with them.

There will also be visits to companies, generally in the IT field. Although it may not be easy to believe, not only computer scientists have a place there, but mathematicians as well. All it takes is knowing (and wanting) to use your knowledge and talent to do something that will help others too.
The main objective of the project is the school and professional guidance of 200 high school students in terminal grades who are in at-risk situations, by organizing annual summer programs (June-July) between 2017 and 2019. This early university experience aims to improve the transition process from high school to university education, being fully aligned with the Institutional Strategic Development Plan 2016–2020 of the „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași, which aims to attract a constant number of students by ensuring equal access to education, as well as developing projects and stimulating initiatives to attract high school graduates to the university.

In addition to familiarizing students with the academic environment, the project also aims to increase their self-esteem and confidence that they will succeed in pursuing university studies, to provide them with the context for developing relevant skills for success in higher education, and to present them with options for professional growth and building their own future.

This year’s summer school will take place between July 8 and July 21 (lasting for 2 consecutive weeks) and is prepared and implemented within the two faculties: the Faculty of Philosophy and Social-Political Sciences and the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences. The program will include a wide range of activities, among which: the presentation of the educational offering by representatives of the two faculties, the presentation of university facilities and equipment, the holding of courses and seminars similar to those carried out during the academic year, professional counseling and career guidance, workshops in specific fields, participation in recreational-sports activities (team games, movie screenings, folk concerts), cultural events, and relaxation and exploratory visits/walks around the university city of Iași.

Throughout the duration of the summer school, students will constantly benefit from the support of university academic staff, the involvement of student association representatives, and student volunteers, so that they may live an authentic university experience that will stimulate them to continue their studies.
Organization and security measures: The summer school will take place for two weeks in the Campus of the „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași.
